Medical students begin to explore the realm of near death experiences, hoping for insights. Each has their heart stopped and is revived. They begin having flashes of walking nightmares from their childhood, reflecting sins they committed or had committed against them. The experiences continue to intensify, and they begin to be physically beaten by their visions as they try and go deeper into the death experience to find a cure.
In October 2015, Ellen Page was cast in the reboot film for an unspecified role. In February 2016, Diego Luna was added to the cast, following him Nina Dobrev also joined the film in April. In May 2016, Kiersey Clemons and James Norton signed on for the film.
In July 2016, it was announced that Kiefer Sutherland, who starred in the original film, would be returning for the reboot. Sutherland later disclosed that he was reprising his role from the original film, revealing that the new film would actually be a sequel rather than a remake.
