Sleeping Beauty turns 59! | Redux Reports | Walt Disney Animation Studios
Original trailer for Walt Disney’s classic animated feature Sleeping Beauty
More about: Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty
Sleeping Beauty premiered 59 years ago on this day. Based on the classic fairy tale with musical themes from Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet version of the story, the entire look of the film was different from any animated movie ever produced, partly because of a budget that exceeded $6 million dollars—the most expensive of any of Disney’s features to date—and largely due to the unique painting style of artist Eyvind Earle. Although the film was a box office disappointment, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score. The box office flop led the studio to hold off on producing another animated fairy tale feature until The Little Mermaid 30 years later.
