Redux Reviews Disney’s Moana | The Hollywood Redux Podcast | Episode 335
The Writers’ Room Podcast returns with a new episode reviewing latest Disney vehicle, Moana, the story of a teenage girl on a dangerous voyage to save her people.
During her journey, Moana meets the once powerful, now disgraced demigod Maui, who helps Moana in her quest. They cruise through an action-packed adventure on a beautifully rendered ocean, with monsters and much danger. Through the course of the narrative, Moana fulfills her destiny and discovers the one thing she always sought: her own identity.
Watch the episode below for the full review:
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays ancillary character, Maui, and the score features original music by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, so the movie has seemingly wide appeal. Characters also go up against a ship full of adorable (but armed like Mad Max Fury Road) coconut pirates. In general the supporting animals were true to Disney form adorable, like sweet Hei Hei the chicken, seen below.
And finally, Moana herself is a great role model who demonstrates indomitable spirit, curiosity, and courage. The way she’s written is straightforward, less constrained to gender boundaries than older Disney fare. It’s a refreshing characterization and a fun story for all ages, but safe for families.
