X-Men Apocalypse (2016) Review | The Hollywood Redux Podcast | Episode 309

The Writer’s Room is having a super summer – we’ve previously reviewed Batman vs. Superman, Captain America: Civil War, discussed our fav super hero movies, and now, our power is enhanced tenfold by X Men: Apocalypse.

Watch for more on the state of X movies:

X Men: Apocalypse is the ninth installment in the series and is a sequel to 2014’s X Men: Days of Future Past. Directed by Bryan Singer, with a screenplay by Simon Kinberg from a story conceived by Singer, Kinberg, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, the film features an ensemble cast, led by James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn and Lucas Till. An ancient mutant, En Sabah Nur aka Apocalypse, awakens in 1983, and plans to cleanse the human race from the earth with his four horsemen, including a teenage Storm (Alexandra Shipp).

There are lots of new mutant faces, but many much-anticipated characters like Psylocke (Munn) or Storm are given little to do in the overall story. This oeuvre’s new Nightcrawler, (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is a welcome addition, offering comic relief and ethos (the kids take him to the mall), and Evan Peters’ Quicksilver brings joy again in a new sequence to match the Time in a Bottle prison break from Days of Future Past.

Fassbender and McAvoy as Magneto and Professor X work hard but are hindered by heavy storylines that do not pan out. The Magneto storyline in particular suffers from its utilization of a writing trope known as “fridging” which is when the pain/death of a female character only serves to inform the male character. The summer of super continues with more high octane movies like Independence Day Resurgence.
