Feel Good Movies | Writers’ Room Podcast | Episode 333

Movies are a powerful medium for putting your experiences/emotions into perspective. What do you watch when you’re feeling low? What’s your go to sick day programming? What do you watch when school’s out for snow/hurricane/tornado? The Writers’ Room is talking our favorite feel good movies, the flicks you crave to set your head right again.

Comedies are a great source of comfort and escape – Anchorman, Dumb and Dumber, Zoolander, Sister Act, the list goes on. Family films like Mrs. Doubtfire, Hook (RIP Mr. Williams) and Back to the Future are also reliable. Universal appeal is a hallmark of a top notch feel good film – Ferris Bueller and Pixar classics like The Incredibles and Finding Nemo.

Dumb and Dumber is a 1994 American comedy road film starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. It was written by the Farrelly brothers and Bennett Yellin, and is the Farrelly brothers’ directorial debut. The film tells the story of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, two unintelligent but well-meaning friends from Providence, Rhode Island who set out on a cross-country trip to Aspen, Colorado to return a briefcase full of money to its owner, only to be pursued by a group of criminals who are after the briefcase.

The film was released on December 16, 1994. It grossed $247 million at the box office and has developed a cult following in the years since its release.[2][3] The success of Dumb and Dumber launched the career of the Farrelly brothers and solidified Carrey’s.[4] The film also spawned an animated TV series, a 2003 prequel, and a 2014 sequel.

  1. No rom-coms? Perhaps it’s not your usual genre (can’t say I’m in to Slasher films…) but come on! Notting Hill, Groundhog Day, You’ve got Mail, Music and Lyrics. And covering many genres – Princess Bride!

    • Missing Katie in the mix – she would have said Two Weeks Notice, It Happened One Night, and Bridget Jones’ Diary, to name a few.
